2-Day Desert Tour: Marrakech to Zagora

If you only have two days, this is the desert trip that fits: Zagora is a full three hours closer to Marrakech than Merzouga, which makes a real Sahara night possible on a weekend. You cross the High Atlas, walk the kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou and descend the palm-lined Draa Valley — then ride camels into the sands at sunset.
Be honest with your expectations: the dunes near Zagora are low and scattered, not the 150-metre giants of Erg Chebbi. What you get instead is time — less driving, more desert evening. If the big dunes matter to you, take the 3-day Merzouga circuit; if a short escape matters more, this is the one.

Itinerary
Day 1 — Marrakech · Aït Ben Haddou · Draa Valley · Zagora camp
Early departure over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, a walk through Aït Ben Haddou, lunch in Ouarzazate and the descent into the Draa Valley. At Zagora the camels are saddled for the sunset ride to camp: dinner, music and a night under the stars.
Day 2 — Sunrise · Draa Valley · return to Marrakech
Sunrise over the sands, breakfast at camp and the camel ride back. The return road retraces the Draa and the Atlas with photo stops, reaching Marrakech by early evening.

Zagora or Merzouga — which should I choose?
Choose Zagora when time is short: one less day, much less driving. Choose Merzouga (our 3 or 4-day circuits) when the great dunes are the point — Erg Chebbi is in a different league. Our guide comparing the two goes into detail.
How many hours of driving?
About 7 hours on day 1 and 7 on day 2, broken by stops. It is a lot for two days — that is the honest price of a desert night this short.
What is the camp like?
A fixed camp at the edge of the Zagora sands: traditional tents, mattresses and blankets, shared bathroom facilities, dinner and breakfast cooked on site.
