This is the classic Sahara experience — and the reason most travellers come to Merzouga. In the late afternoon you climb onto your camel at the edge of the village and ride into the dunes of Erg Chebbi, the tallest in Morocco, reaching camp just as the sand turns copper and the first stars appear.
The evening is the Saharan way: tagine cooked over the fire, mint tea, drum rhythms around the campfire, and a night sky with no light pollution at all. In the morning you wake for sunrise over the dunes, eat breakfast at camp and ride back — in time for a shower and the road ahead.

Itinerary
Afternoon — Camel ride into Erg Chebbi
We meet in Merzouga around two hours before sunset. Your cameleer introduces you to your camel and the caravan sets off into the dunes, arriving at camp in the golden hour. Climb the nearest ridge for sunset with a glass of tea.
Evening — Dinner, drums and stars
Dinner is cooked at camp and eaten together — soup, tagine, fruit, tea. Afterwards your hosts play traditional drum music around the fire. Sleep in your tent, or ask for a mattress outside and fall asleep under the Milky Way.
Morning — Sunrise and return
Wake before dawn to watch the sun rise over the dunes, then breakfast at camp before the ride back to Merzouga. You arrive by mid-morning, where showers and your luggage are waiting.

How long is the camel ride?
About 1.5 hours each way, at walking pace with photo stops. It is comfortable for first-time riders, and you can walk beside the caravan whenever you prefer.
What is the camp like? Are there toilets?
Our standard camp has traditional carpeted tents, proper mattresses and thick blankets, plus a shared toilet tent. If you prefer an ensuite bathroom and real beds, ask about our luxury camp option when booking.
Is one night enough?
For sunset, a full night sky and sunrise in the dunes — yes, this itinerary covers it all. If you want deeper desert silence and remote camps, look at our multi-day treks.
Can children join?
Yes — this is our most family-friendly tour. Children from around age 5 ride comfortably; smaller children can share a saddle with a parent.
What should I bring?
A warm layer (desert nights are cold, even in summer), a scarf, sunscreen, and a torch. Everything else stays in our luggage room in Merzouga.
Do you run this in summer?
Yes, year-round — in July and August we leave later in the afternoon and the camp has full shade. The best months are September to May.
